StumbleUpon And Your Alternative Health Practice

StumbleUpon is catching on. It was surprising to find out that, in my office full of startupstumbleupon logo internet nerds, I was the only one who had ever used StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon is an old friend of mine. More like a comrade who helped fend off the endless hours of boredom during class, after class, before bed, on dates etc. StumbleUpon is a tool that gave me so many conversation starters that began: “well did you know…” and “did you see…” (enter super-sweet fact/artsy-vibe talk here). Thanks to StumbleUpon I could know a little about everything in the world!

But seriously, I learned and saw things I would have never known about using that boring old search bar. Thanks Google for your time and patience, but sometimes you just don’t get me. StumbleUpon is that perfect boyfriend that wears thick glasses and a tight-stripped sweater who listens and cares about your interests. He wants to make you laugh and cry and then send you to a website that you can buy something nice for yourself.

The bottom line is, StumbleUpon is not just a black hole of information, an endless cavern where websites go to die. It is actually the fastest growing social media site in the social stratosphere. The stats say it all. According to mashable.com, StumbleUpon accounts for 50% of all referral web traffic. Let me put that into perspective: Facebook, Twitter and YouTube combined drive 43% of web traffic. What’s more, 51 pages are added to StumbleUpon every minute. Now, here is where I throw a new concept into the mix, but stick with me.

Techies everywhere are talking about half-lives of websites and posts. And no, I am not talking about radioactive goo when I say half-life. Ok, lets pretend that your little kitten jumped right into the toilet and, just for fun, you threw your fish in too. Oh, and you just happened to have your snazzy new iphone to capture this kitten-fish swim session. You post the video on your Facebook wall and you get a few laughs and maybe a repost or two. Basically, the half-life of your video is the amount of time you get half of the clicks/reposts/tweets/shares that the video will ever receive in its lifetime. So the half-life depends on a few factors like: how long someone is engaged with the actual video, how many people look at it, and how many people share it with their friends. Here is a little fact to blow your mind: the half-life of something shared on StumbleUpon is 400 hours! In comparison, the half-life of something shared on facebook is a measly 3.2 hours.

The point is, StumbleUpon is worth some exploration. Stay tuned for my next blog, and until then Stumble ON!
