5 Tasty (and healthy!) Ways to Spice Up Your Standard Bowl of Oats.
Oats are definitely part of a nutritious breakfast, but they can be pretty boring if you stick with the standard recipe. You can always add fresh fruit to add a little upmph to your breakfast, but here are a few unique ways that you can spice up your next bowl and even pack in more nutrients, too!
- Pumpkin: The perfect ingredient for those brisk fall mornings. Not only does it remind your taste buds of Thanksgiving, but it’s also packed with fiber and vitamins. Just be sure to either make your own puree or opt for the unsweetened canned version. Add a spoonful to your oatmeal, then maybe a pinch of brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon, and you’ve got your self a steaming bowl of oatmeal pumpkin pie. Want to know more about Pumpkin? - Yogurt: For a little extra rich creaminess, and calcium, you can throw some non-fat yogurt into your oat mix. Vanilla or plain, scoop to taste. The Quaker Oats website suggests combining it with some mashed bananas, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar and pecans, for a taste that’s just like your granny’s banana bread.
- Fruit Preserves: Instead of sugar or artificial sweeteners, add a small spoonful of your favorite fruit preserve to your oatmeal. Usually, these are comparably more healthy and low in calories and fat, plus they still maintain a bit of fiber and vitamins to enhance your breakfast. Delish!
- Honey: If you’ve been following our online content, you’ll know that we are BIG fans of honey. With so many health benefits and such a great flavor, this is the perfect sweetener and health boost for your oatmeal.
- Peanut Butter: If you want to add more protein and healthy fat to your morning routine, try adding a scoop of peanut butter. If you stick to the natural kinds, which are usually lower in sugar, a tablespoon or two of crunchy or creamy can be a scrumptious addition to your oatmeal. You can even combine your berry preserves with a scoop of peanut butter for a delectable PB&J kind of breakfast!
