What to Know About BPAWhat to Know about BPA

BPA is surrounded by negativity and uncertainty on the news and elsewhere. But why? What’s so bad about BPA?

It’s time for some clarification:

The controversial compound Bisphenol A, or BPA, combines with polymers and epoxy resins to make plastics. The strong presence of BPA in consumer products as well as its synthetic hormone-like property has caused concern over its safety. Sparked by a 2010 report from the Food and Drug Administration on the effects of BPA on infants and young children, numerous governments worldwide responded by placing limitations on BPA. In 2010, the Canadian government declared BPA a toxic substance. BPA is also banned from baby bottles in the European Union.

Credited with endless health problems, BPA is linked to an increased risk for cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Steer clear of potentially dangerous BPA side effects by making a few lifestyle changes. A few tips from drfranklipman.com below:

  • Stop eating out of cans! If you just can’t say no to that Campbell’s tomato soup: cut down to once a month to reduce your BPA exposure.
  • Avoid #3 & #7! You’ll find BPAs in 7s and toxic PVC in containers marked with #3.
  • Try using wooden or bamboo utensils and stainless steel or glass containers when you cook.

Are you aware of your BPA exposure? How do you modify your lifestyle to avoid products with BPA?
