Breathing Exercises May Help Soothe Heartburn

by on Dec 16th, 2011

Good news for GERD sufferers! You might be able to huff and puff your heartburn away. A recent clinical trial showed deep breathing exercises to be effective in providing relief for certain individuals suffering from heartburn complications. The report opens up doors for alternative health practitioners seeking holistic, natural therapies for their patients with acid reflux disease.

The study of 19 adults with mild gastroesophageal reflux disease found special belly breathing exercises to reduce acid reflux. Reported in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, the study shows a promising connection between breathing exercises and GERD control but additional research is needed for a more concrete case.

A senior researcher on the study, Dr. Karl Martin Hoffmann, noted that deep abdominal breathing could help GERD sufferers with its effects on diaphragm strength. Additionally, as mentioned in Reuters, the breathing exercises offer an alternative treatment without the side effects of formal medication.

Have you experienced success with your own patients using this technique? Does deep abdominal breathing treat other conditions as well?
