HandsCan’t stop itching and scratching? Welcome to the club. As the air gets colder our skin can become dry and irritated. Here are five of the best natural remedies to fend off winter itch ‘till spring.

H2O. Cold air is dry air. Breathing abnormally dry air over the winter months can slowly dehydrate you. If you’ve been playing outside in the cold winter wonderland, make sure to drink plenty of water afterward. This is especially important for those skiing or snowboarding in the mountains at high altitudes!

Turn the heat down. There’s nothing quite like a long, hot shower on a cold winter day. Unfortunately, nothing zaps your skins moisture like a steamy rinse. Showering with hot water can leech the natural oils out of your skin, meaning the rest of your day will be spent in Itch City. A sure skin fix is simply lowering the temperature of your shower.

Natural Oils. Choosing a great moisturizer can become overwhelming when faced with the hundreds of choices along the lotion aisle.  It is important to note that many moisturizers are full of skin drying chemicals and industrially produced ingredients which can be harmful not only to your skin, but to your health. Moisturizing with natural oils, such as coconut, olive and almond, will naturally heal your skin from the outside in.

Omega-3. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help improve your winter skin. Such foods include salmon, flaxseed, tuna, avocado, nuts and seeds.

Oatmeal. Turns out, oatmeal isn’t just for breakfast anymore. Try applying ground, cooked (and cooled!) oats to your skin for a skin-quenching DIY dry skin remedy. (Tip: Don’t use instant or prepackaged types due to the sugar and artificial flavors, stick to natural or organic plain oats.)
