University of Missouri researchers have discovered that a meditation technique called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (or MBSR), is an effective complementary tool used to enhance the quality of life for survivors during traditional post-cancer treatment.

Basi’s article states that according to the American Cancer Society, the survival rates of women who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer are higher than those of past decades. However, research also shows that among other health challenges faced by breast cancer survivors, nearly 50 percent encounter depression.

Professor of nursing, Jane Armer, was quoted in this article saying that, “Mindfulnees-based meditation, ideally should be practiced every day or at least on a routine schedule. [It] teaches patients new ways of thinking that will give them short- and long-term benefits.”

MBSR incorporates meditation, yoga and physical awareness in an 8-10 week program that helps participants train their mind to cope with stress.  The Western Journal of Nursing Research reports “survivors who learned MBSR lowered their blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate,” according to Basi’s article. Additionally, this technique was able to improve moods and increase the level of mindfulness of the class participants.
