Ginkgo and Seizure Risk
January 28, 2010The popular herb ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) may increase the risk of seizures in people with epilepsy, according to a review article.
German researchers examined the scientific literature on ginkgo and found about 10 cases in which use of ginkgo products was linked to seizures. In addition, laboratory studies suggest that ginkgotoxin, a compound found in the ginkgo plant, may alter a chemical signaling pathway in ways that might trigger epileptic seizures. The review's authors also say it is possible that ginkgo may interact with antiseizure medications and reduce their effectiveness.
According to the authors, ginkgo is used in European medicine to improve memory, to treat neuronal disorders such as tinnitus or intermittent claudication and to improve brain metabolism and peripheral blood flow.
